TLZInstaller
TermLynx Zero Installer
Overview
The TLZInstaller is a program designed to pre-install TermLynx on a Microsoft Word client with a single click.
Note: TLZInstaller setups only function on Windows clients using legacy versions of Microsoft Word.
How do the pre-installed Web Add-ins work
Certain web add-ins from the store can be pre-installed on a Microsoft Word desktop client on Windows.
A pre-installed web add-in is bound to a pre-installed add-in slot and will install the add-in upon invoking the command. A button on the Ribbon will invoke the specified command.
A good example of this is the Wikipedia web add-in, which is bound to the first pre-install slot.
Using the TLZInstaller
The TLZInstaller creates a new registry entry that binds the Microsoft Word command mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 to the installation of TermLynx.
It will then store the manifest.xml and icons in the cache location.
Finally, TLZInstaller modifies the Microsoft Word UI to create a button that will invoke the mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 command.
The TLZInstaller will also hide the Add-in Store and its Wikipedia button.
Steps to follow
To use the TLZInstaller, follow these steps:
- Download the TLZInstaller.exe from TermLynx and place it on a file share.
- Run the TLZInstaller as an administrator.
- Re-open Microsoft Word and confirm that the "Activate" button is present.
Pitfalls
Activating the Add-in Store (Microsoft Word)
Because Microsoft Word believes the mso:OfficeExtensionsFeaturedApp2 command installs a web add-in from the Add-in Store, you must enable it. Otherwise, the "Activate" button will be disabled, even if web add-ins are enabled.
Blocking the Add-in Store (firewall)
Our recommended solution to block access to the Add-in Store is to use a firewall rule. Here's an example:
Action: block
Application Name: C:\\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\WINWORD.EXE
Direction: OUT
Enabled: true
Protocol: TCP
Name: Block Add-ins Store
Remote Addresses: 52.111.0.0-52.111.255.255
Modern Microsoft Word Versions
The TLZInstaller is only a workaround for versions of Microsoft Word that were sold using bulk licensing.
Using the TLZInstaller on modern versions of Microsoft Word, like the ones deployed via Office 365, is not a viable way to install TermLynx.
For modern Microsoft Word versions, refer to Add-in Store or Centralize deployment.
